Sune is autistic, but is feeling well ...
By Pia Jensen, Sunes mother

About 6 years ago, we got a lovely little boy.  Sune was at an early age contact demanding and selective, he could use only his mother.  He could be very unhappy if his mother was just taking a bath or the like. Sune was our first child and we were unsure of what was within the normal response and development. Nurses believed that Sune was a happy and normal boy.
Sune was growing restless, so he started early in day care.  It was my hope that perhaps he was just missing being with other children.  In the day care  they had observed that Sune did not like to have many people around him.  This was particularly pronounced when Sune  with the day care visited a kindergarten.
When Sune was 3 years old he had to go to kindergarten, sinde one cannot  prolong day care.  He cried every day for 3 months, isolated himself from other children - he could talk, but he could not say no, and feel his own needs. The Kindergarten informed us that Sunes reaction was atypical, and recommended that he should be examined.  A psychologist was to test Sune, but he would / could not.
In the kindergarten Sunes concentration worsened.  He was hotheaded, did not cooperate and were often reproachful. As parents, we insisted that he should be moved to a small kindergarten when he was 4 ˝ years old. Half a year later both we and Sune were interviewed at Aalborg Hospital South, child psychiatric department. An action plan was worked out. An educational consultant and a psychologist would observe Sune in the kindergarten.  We asked that they also came to visit us at home because it was our view that it would provide a better picture of Sune.

Diagnosis: Infantile autism...
In September 2006, the psychologist gave Sune the diagnosis, infantile autism. It was a hard blow in many ways.  I as a mother felt that the diagnosis was not based on a professional foundation as the observations they presented were interpretative in my eyes. I do not think that observation can be built on presumptions.  If something is examined scientifically, it must be verified by others who would get the same result. I will allow myself to doubt that this verification could be achieved. It was also surprising that it was a psychologist who conducted the investigation and gave the diagnosis, and not a psychiatrist.
I, therefore, made an agreement that Sune should be reviewed before he was to begin school and this was recorded in his papers.
When we as parents had received and accepted the diagnosis, we expectated that treatment should now be implemented.  But the medical profession could do nothing. This Information was presented in a hard and brutal way, with no regard to the parents' feelings, and with no regard to the fact that this  was an "attack" on the most prescious we had, namely our son.  There was no respect towards us.  And the review I as a mother had fought for, what use was it going to be?  For whose sake was it to be made? At least not for Sunes benefit was my conclusion.
Frustrations and a parental cohabitation, which was severely tested.  It was very difficult to talk about - and it was not much use taking about it ... the system had rendered their verdict, there was no way forward.
I, Sunes mother, is working in the municipality.  I am almost brought up with the fact that there are solutions within the system - just look for the right department / person. But here there was no offer, no hope, no way out.  Rather only a state of paralysis and emotional chaos. Maybe it was that which gave renewed strength. Sune was in so much need of help and I could not just look at the fact that he might even get worse.

The Dawson Program ...
I have a friend with whom I play badminton, who has a child with Asperger's. She told me about a practitioner of  the Dawson Program, who have helped her son so much that he now goes to ordinary school.  I was very skeptical.  Had lots of concerns, a very short time before, I decided to contact kinesiologist Margit Andersson where my friend’s boy had been in treatment. In February 2006, Sune began treatment at Margit.
Margit did not know much about Sunes problems. She knew about the anger, that he did not like contact and that he had a difficult time.  The test showed that Sune was immature, tense, full of anxiety, and that he had plenty of accumulations of chemical trauma. I.e. his child vaccinations.
After some treatments Sune calmed down in kindergarten. He was better at using words to draw the line, and started to play a little with one of the other children.  He was more happy at home and liked to go to the kindergarten. The head of the kindergarten was very sympathetic towards Sunes treatments - it was also nice that she was forthcoming, so I do not need to defend myself.
But then Sune got stuck a little
As a mother I became fearful of what happens to Sune if he suddenly loses his parents. The family is busy with their own lives, the grandparents are too old to take over and so I chose to talk to the municipal psyhological advisory department again, and they proposed to find a relief family for Sune. But I did not like that. I myself would find a family that suits Sune if this is the solution.
After some months, it's as if the treatment does not progress any more. Through a friend, I came in contact with a clairvoyant.  She sent me a mail with the name of an internationally recognized dietician. I am a little puzzled, but calls the dietician. It turns out that she is researching the relationship between diet and autism. Urine samples are tested for peptides and the outcome is that Sune is highly allergic to gluten and milk.
I want to go slowly forward, because this is how Sune thrives the best. So gluten is removed from Sunes diet over a week. He is tested again at Margit – and his allergy is reflected in the test. Sune is allergic.
I contacted a home consultant and made an appointment that she should come to our house. I wanted to get a discussion of whether we could change anything in the house, so Sune could get a more optimal home?  His toys had to be structured, plants and a clock were moved, as they could disrupt his game. Also pictograms were proposed, where one could hang pictures of today's proceedings. Here I chose a different solution. I gave Sune little options instead. Completely understandable thing, so he was trained to feel what he wanted to do. Shall we sit and play, mother and you, for a half hour, or will you play by yourself?' was just a small but fully functioning example.
As Sune approached school age, I telephoned the Aalborg school, department for autism. I would like to visit the school, so I could feel the atmosphere and see how the school was. I went on several visits, the last two with Sune. It was a great experience. The school signaled structure and a good atmosphere, so in consultation with the municipal psyhological advisory department, I filed for a place for Sune at the Aalborg School.
Sune now flourishes. His learning ability is better, his concentration has improved, balance is better.  He can put words on his needs, he can 'wait for his turn', he is open and last but not least, he is curious and independent.  Margit has been involved all along in this development and it is purely her profits that Sune is as good as he is! He has not yet been finalized, but I am so grateful for everything Margit has helped us with so far.
